Seasons Eatings 2013 Wall Calendar - Dear Colleen

A friend of mine writes for a few blogs and recently did a post on calanders for 2013. You can read it here.
The post features this rad calander by Dear Colleen:

Large - Seasons Eatings 2013 Wall Calendar

Large - Seasons Eatings 2013 Wall Calendar

Large - Seasons Eatings 2013 Wall Calendar

Large - Seasons Eatings 2013 Wall Calendar

I love the idea behind this calander which acts as a monthly guide to what New Zealand produce is in season and for sale at markets and shops.
Each months page is illustrated beautifully with bright fruit and vegetables that are sure to have you craving your 5+ A Day as well as leaving you drooling for the return of your favourite juicy, ripe citrus or stonefruit.
It's also an investment in assisting you with saving money in the long term and helping the planet (well that's how I look at it . . .) By knowing what to buy in season you'll be buying produce that's fresh, grown locally and most probably costs less. It's also printed on re-cycled paper. Yuss!
Hooray for another perfect Christmas gift! (Wishlist if anyone is wondering).

Buy yours online at the dearcolleen Etsy shop.

Before I Die I Want To

The 'Before I Die' art project  has just been set up in St Patricks Square (43 Wyndham Street, Auckland) and I want to go!

It's an interactive piece and like her other projects, is designed to make cities contemplate in the hope that a collective public engagement can bring together ideas and make better communities. I think it must work a treat. And it kind of shows that on a whole we are all so different, but deep down still so the same.

Here is what Candy says of the idea:

It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day and forget what really matters to you. When I lost someone I loved very much, I thought about death a lot. This helped clarify my life, the people I want to be with, and the things I want to do, but I struggled to maintain perspective. I wanted to know what was important to the people around me and I wanted a daily reminder. So with help from old and new friends, I painted the side of an abandoned house in my neighborhood in New Orleans with chalkboard paint and stenciled it with the sentence “Before I die I want to _______.” so anyone walking by can pick up a piece of chalk, reflect on their lives, and share their personal aspirations in public space.

I think her other work is pretty cool too.

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween Everyone!

Enviro Fashion Tip:
Try your hand at creating your Halloween costume with make-up effects or hire/ borrow a costume, instead of buying a cheap/ trashy costume that you will throw away.
Generally Halloween costumes are poorly constructed and made from man made fabrics like polyester which will take hundreds of years to break down in landfill. Now that's a frightening thought!

Trilogy Love

Yesterday I asked a beauty wise friend who shares my values for all things natural, simple and ethical for her recommendations on skincare. Her instant response was Trilogy.
I've just checked out their site and it's a goodie, jam packed full of info. There are detailed explainations of the ingredients used in their products and information on the qualities of each individual ingredients benefits.
The companies philosophy discusses the brands ethics and consideration for the environment which come across as a genuine and honest (I like that).
These products are now on my shopping list:

Very Gentle Cleansing Cream:
From the Sensitive Skin Range this cleanser gently cleans the skin, removing make-up - including mascara.
It is alcohol and fragrence free and includes Almond, Avocado and Camellia to clean and sooth skin without drying. Check out those glossy awards too!

Vital Moisturising Cream:
I'll be using this as my daily moisturiser. It features an SPF15 and includes Certified Organic Rosehip Oil as one of its ingredients.
Rosehip oil features through many of Triology's products and is a natural oil that effectively improves the appearance of uneven skintone, wrinkles, scars and stretchmarks. Worthwhile looking into their other body moisturisers too.

Replenishing Night Cream:
This cream includes the important wonder ingredient, Vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate). Vitamin A is an antioxidant highly effective in treating aging skin. It may help reduce wrinkles and fine lines, increase collagen production, smooth skin texture, increase skin thickness, and diminish acne. Perfect for the ageing paranoid among us.
(I spy some more sweet awards there too.)

To scope out their full product range or for further info check out there site here.

Meat Free Monday - 08.10.12

It really felt like Summer is rolling in today (never-mind that it rained on and off all day, we're in New Zealand and that happens year round). I had all my doors wide open  so I could enjoy the balmy temperature and worked with my workrooms roller door up until 7.30 before noticing nighttime had arrived.

I even have Basil growing again. What a treat!

My absolute favourite basil including recipe is the classic pizza Margarita. I think pizzas are best when they are kept simple, so the line up of Tomato Paste, shredded chunks of Buffalo Mozzarella, sliced Tomato, torn up fresh basil and smattering of cracked Pepper are my idea of pizza perfection.

Do tell if you have any truly worthy additions (good luck!)

Have a great week C x

Glory Garden 05.10.12

I got my garden planted pretty nicely over the last week. It's not my dream garden by any stretch as it is confined to a tiny courtyard and a deck. But I am pretty happy with my effort all the same. I have planted out various pots with a range of fragrant beauties including Gardenias (my favourite garden flower), Sweet Pea's, Allysum and Lavender. There is also a Dwarf Kaffir Lime tree, Blueberries and herbs to satisy (in the smallest amount) my self sufficent garden dreams.
Oh and there are some White Geranium cuttings from Nana Rose's garden that I have poked into some window baskets on my deck. I'm dreaming of the day that they are in all their glory and luciously tumbling down out of the baskets.
No pictures at this stage, so here is some visual inspiration from my 'Somewhere to Garden' board on Pinterest. You can check out the board here.

Garden styling at it best.

Self sufficent glory.

Sweet Pea's on an Obleisk (I have mine doing the same up a wrought iron one).

Dreamy Potager

Thyme in a vintage can (Nice way to upcycle).

Carpet Togs

These swimsuits are made from discarded carpets and fishing nets:

The Brand is Auria and the swimwear pictured have just been included in the Estethica Showcase during London Fashion week for S/S13. I read all about Auria and the other brands involved in Viva today. You can read the article here.
The event, now in its fifth year is dedicated to showcasing designers who combine both excellent designs and ethical values to produce luxury sustainable fashion. Each Estethica designer includes at least one of the Estethica principles being; fair-trade practices, organic fibres and/or recycled materials.
The swimwear created by Auria is produced from stretch polyamide that is made using discarded materials including carpet and fishing net. Combine the excellent use of upcycling with the labels late 80's/ 90's, super model/ LA beach babe inspiration and the range is a fashion lover gone greens dream come true!
I do hope Auria gets stocked in New Zealand or at least ship to our distant shores when the range becomes available.
Check out their excellent Tumbler blog here.

Ethletic Kicks

I have found them! Sneakers that pay homeage to the classicly cool Converse Chucks, sans the sweatshop and environmentally harmful manufacturing process. Horay!!!
They are from label Ethletic and are made with Organic Cotton Canvas, Fairly Traded Rubber (that is also FSC Certified) and have no plastic included at all. Even the Laces are made from Organic Cotton.
Like the name suggests they are also ethically made. Producers are paid premium fairtrade prices for their labour and also have health and welfare benifits provided.
I can not wait to order and receive mine . . . the only problem is that for once in the relm of sustainable shopping, a range of choice is available, (not really a problem is it).
Shop online here.
